Continental: Integrating sensors for more safety

By means of linking data which already exist in a vehicle, a new generation of systems developed by the automotive supplier Continental is going to improve the protection of the passengers. The utilisation of data, for example of the ESP, and also the integration of radar and camera sensors from driver assistance systems shall make it possible to provide protection against a looming accident within a split second. Thats how airbags, seat belt tighteners or headrests can be activated faster so that the driver and the front-seat passenger can be protected even better. Up to 30 different airbags are available for modern vehicles to protect the passenger against severe injuries in an accident. Other injuries and their consequences can be prevented or eased when the vehicles automatically closes the sunroof and windows immediately before an accident happens so that no object can pierce in, positions the seat perfectly if possible as well as adjusts the headrests so that long whiplash injuries can be prevented. The time frame for activating these protection systems is extremely short. By means of sensors which measure the acceleration the air bag control unit has felt the first impact. Now it is learning how to view and hear as well so that it can react much earlier.
