It's a clash of the systems: Volkswagen in the Race Touareg 2 with diesel engine against serial winner Mitsubishi in a Pajero with petrol engine. Up to now, VW is ahead and dominated the first five legs of the race. The first three positions are being held by the company drivers of the Wolfsburg team. 187 cars face the traditional torture over a total of 15 stages and close to 8,000 kilometres, starting in Portuguese Lisbon and passing through Spain, Morocco, Mauretania and Mali until they reach "Lac Rose" next to Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Following positions three in 2005 and two last year, VW entered the race with all four improved Race Touareg 2 vehicles (2.5-litre, five-cylinder TDI with two-stage compressor, approx. 285 hp) that were reworked in all important areas (engine, drive, chassis).
